Founder Edward Meeks with his son William in 1931

Meeks Shoes is a family firm that was established over 100 years ago by Edward Meeks.

Edward ran away from home with just a shilling in his pocket and took a job selling shoes in Ashton-under-Lyne.

It was not long before he started up his own shop, which became a great success. Edward became a well respected member of the local community and became Alderman of the borough. The Company still trades today in Ashton, and is now run by the fourth generation of the family, John Meeks and his sister Sally.

There are now four shops in Ashton, Oldham, Sale and Stockport.

We specialise in comfort shoes and wider fitting shoes from a variety of well known brands, such as Clarks Shoes, Ecco, Hotter, Rieker and Gabor.

The current shop in Ashton is actually opposite where the original shop started. The shop is run by Libby, and is where the head office is located. We have been trading successfully at this site for over 30 years now. Brenda, the manager of the ladies department, celebrated 40 years of working for the company earlier this year.

We bought the shop in Oldham from Graham Salter in 2004. Salters, as it was then known, was also a well loved family firm that had been trading since the 1920's. Graham retired and kindly sold the business to us. We have been very lucky to retain all of the staff from the old shop. Joanne, the manager, has worked in the shop since leaving school and Maralyn, the manager of the children's department, has been with the company for over 17 years.

We have been trading in Sale for over 20 years, but have been in the Square for 7 years now. Sale is a smaller town, but has a good mix of independant stores, which is rare now. Sue and Janice have worked for the company for many years now and run the shop between them. We offer a greater range of discounted shoes in this shop, together with our full price merchandise.

We have been trading in Stockport for over 30 years now. The shop is split on 2 floors, the adults on the ground, and the children's upstairs. Mrs Pat Pendlebury is in charge of the shop, and runs it together with Debbie. This shop is Clark's largest children's independent, in the North West, this year.
